About Emily Lewis (she/her)

Emily is a neuro-affirming  psychologist & coach, nature/plant enthusiast, and late-identified AuDHD woman.

I have worked with neurodivergent children, families and adults since 2013, though for the last three years, I have placed my focus on supporting late-identified women and gender-diverse individuals to reconnect with their inner clarity, embrace their wholeness, and find a way forward that feels sustainable and true.

Lived experience and background
I first discovered psychology in high school and it immediately became a special interest, one that I have been captivated by ever since.

Following on from high school, I pursued a psychology degree at university, but quickly became disheartened by its narrow focus on statistics and behaviourism, it felt far removed from the humanistic exploration I was so passionate about. As my interest waned, I found it more and more difficult to apply myself, and my grades suffered. Wanting to reignite my curiosity (before I completely flunked out of uni), I changed paths and enrolled in a Bachelor of Communication (Graphic Design), where I could explore more creative ways of thinking and expressing myself.

While I enjoyed working as a Graphic Designer for a number of years, I remained drawn to the therapeutic world. I eventually returned to study counselling and psychotherapy, where I also trained in coaching. It was there that I experienced, first hand, the healing power of being compassionately heard and understood. While studying, I worked at a natural medicine company, where I was introduced to Eastern healing philosophies and holistic models of wellbeing. Concepts like Qi (life energy) and Shen (the spirit of the heart), and Dao (the golden web of life), helped shape how I understand the mind-body-ecosystem connection, to this day.

Eventually, I returned to psychology to broaden how I could support others. As I pushed through my studies in fits and spurts  (fuelled largely by anxiety), I began to recognise myself in the ADHD diagnostic criteria that I was studying - this realisation hit hard (read: teardrops on my copy of the DSM). However, it wasn’t until later, when I was juggling early parenthood, while running a busy child and family psychology practice, that I reached burnout and was formally diagnosed with ADHD. I felt a mix of relief and grief: it was validating to finally have an explanation, but also deeply painful to realise how long I’d been struggling without support or understanding, and how much that had eroded my sense of self and wellbeing.

After my diagnosis, I did what many of us do, I went on a deep dive into my neurodivergence and discovered that I’m not only ADHD but AuDHD. This exploration helped me understand myself more fully and meet my past with greater self-compassion. I also began to realise that many of the characteristics I appreciated most about myself, like my insatiable curiosity, astute pattern recognition, systems-thinking, creativity, big heart, sense of adventure, and earnestness, weren’t in spite of my neurodivergence, but because of it.

Since then, with plenty of time, patience and gentleness, I’ve recalibrated my life in a way that better supports my neurodivergence, my energy, and my values. My work is an extension of this path - grounded, spacious, and rooted in the belief that we all carry the capacity to heal, grow, and reconnect with what matters most.
